What type of care is available?
The following checklist shows whether your Local Authority has got to provide a particular service by law, or whether it has the option not to provide the service because there is no law to force it to do so.
Checklist of Local Authority care services
For disabled people
It must provide:
- practical assistance in the home
- aids and equipment for disabled people
- adaptations in home
- meals at home or elsewhere
- telephone provision or assistance with obtaining
- education and recreational activities - provision eg. day centres and assistance in taking advantage of these including transport
- holiday provision
- assessment of disabled persons' needs for social education and housing services
- assessment of carers' ability to continue caring
- information about services
- identification of those in need of services
- residential accommodation which is not available from other sources
It may also provide:
- residential accommodation
- social work support
- social rehabilitation
- occupational activities
- holiday homes
- free or subsidised travel where concessions exist
For elderly people
It must provide:
- residential accommodation which is not available from other sources
It may also provide:
- practical assistance in the home
- adaptations in home
- meals at home or elsewhere
- assessment of carers' ability to continue caring
- information about services
- identification of those in need of services
- residential accommodation
- social work support
- free or subsidised travel where concessions exist
- assistance in finding accommodation
- visiting services
- advisory services
