Income

Income that is taken into account includes:

  • retirement pension;
  • company pensions;
  • income from annuities;
  • earnings from employment or owning a business; and
  • most Social Security benefits including the following.

Attendance Allowance, the care component of the Disability Living Allowance, Disability Working Allowance, Invalid Care Allowance, Severe Disablement Allowance, Jobseekers Allowance, industrial Injuries Benefits and Widow's Pension.

Your Local Authority will only take account of your income after tax has been taken out.

The following income is not included.

  • The mobility component of the Disability Living Allowance
  • Payments from the social fund
  • Pensioner's Christmas bonus
  • Payments made by voluntary or charitable groups for expenses you had to pay while you were doing voluntary work
  • Payments for certain expenses you had to pay at work
  • Interest from savings
  • 'Income' received in the form of food, clothing or cigarettes for instance
  • The special war widow's pension which was introduced in April 1990 for women who became war widows before 1973

Three types of income are only partly included:

  • The income from home income plans that pays the mortgage on your home will not be included. But any other income you receive from the plans will be
  • All but £20 a week of any regular charitable or voluntary payments or £10 of any war disablement or war widow's pension will be included
  • Some payments made to you by people living in your home will not be included, for example, payments from sub-tenants, boarders and adult children

Joint income

If you and your partner have any income in both names, it will be halved to work out your share. An occupational or personal pension which is due to one of you as the scheme member will also be split in the same way if it forms part of the income which supports a married couple, and as long as the money is 'handed over' to the other partner.
